What to serve for class birthday snack?

Posted by Melissa M.

Do you have any suggestions for a healthy snack to serve for a birthday party snack? My daughter just turned 4 years old and I'm searching for something healthier than cupcakes to share with her friends at preschool. Our last thought was strawberry shortcake (with angel food cake, and heavy on the strawberries, light on the cream).

Lots of times we have fruit with yogurt dip, baby carrots with ranch dressing, or bunches of grapes. It's kind of difficult because most schools these days don't let you bring anything cooked at home.
Are you looking more for a dessert type item? Jello Cutouts in muffin cups. Like Lela said, a cut up fruit dish is pretty popular. Animal crackers or graham crackers are good snacks for a crowd.

I couldn't think of anything fun, so I had a look online and found some ideas. First, I'm sure most kids love banana bread, so why not throw a loaf together for the shindig? It's pretty easy; even I can do it!

Or, if banana bread's not your thing, have a look at this recipe for a cold treat (yogurt pops):

Last of all, muffins are always a hit around my house. Here's a recipe for zucchini muffins:

I hope you find something the kids love!

These were always a hit with kids at my school:  http://farm1.static.flickr.com/213/496270044_683537ba55.jpg  Just a marshmallow topped with a tiny drop of melted chocolate and an M and M.

I also used to take mini carrot cake muffins- my mom made them using applesauce instead of oil, and topping with a light cream cheese frosting. Banana bread baked in muffin cups was always fun too.
