Tip for Today: Treating a Jellyfish Sting

Posted Jul 21 2008 10:08am 1 Comment

ENTER IMAGE NAME BETWEEN QUOTES - USE ENGLISH NOT FILE NAMING STRUCTURE With summer comes trips to the beach. Trips to the beach mean lots of sun and swimming…and sometimes jellyfish stings. How can you take the pain out of a sting if you are unfortunate enough to encounter one of these nasty creatures? First, wash the area with water. Apply vinegar, rubbing alcohol, or baking soda. (Check with the lifeguards on duty if you don’t have any of these on hand.) If there are any tentacles embedded in the wound, remove them with tweezers. Reapply vinegar or cortisone cream as needed. Contact your doctor immediately if any of the following symptoms are present: nausea, vomiting, joint pain, headache, shortness of breath, or trouble walking.

Take a look at this www.jellyfishsquish.com

It's a topical treatment for jellyfish stings that contains the maximum amount of lidocaine. I know they use this in hospitals for topical pain relief.

The research for the products effectiveness was performed by a marine extension of the University of GA. I checked out the site and they are definitely a legitimate research facility. If  you look at the slides on the site, they tested the product against ammonia, vinegar, alcohol, and meat tenderizer. It appears that all of these cause the poison to release into the skin, while jellyfish squish prevents it.

I recently took my family to the beach & noticed a lot of people were getting stung by jellyfish. I found out that the lifeguards were spraying this product on people who were stung and it seemed to be relieving the pain. None of us were stung that day, but we picked some up at one of the beach shops. Later on my son was stung and we spayed it on. He felt almost immediate relief and after an hour or so was brave enough to enter the water again.

I would recommend taking this product with you every time you go to the beach. I know I will.
