The New Food Pyramid for Kids

Posted Sep 12 2010 3:46pm

Link to a detailed description of the food pyramid.

How many of you remember the pyramid of the old days??

6-11 servings of bread per day?!

Now, if you’ll notice the new food pyramid is completely different in that it only recommends 6 ounces of bread/grains/cereal per day. Yahoooooo!!! Or at least, hooray for promoting less grains….But, how many of you have noticed that kids in particular LOVE their bread?! And when I examine my own kids’ diet, they eat more than 6 ounces of bread per day and half the time they can easily eat 2 servings of oatmeal at breakfast alone- not to mention the bread they might have at lunch.

The new pyramid uses actual measurements. {6 ounces of grains, 2 1/2 cups of vegetables, 1 1/12 fruit, 2-3 cups of milk, 5 ounces of protein, and fats are used “sparingly”} Bottom line: Encourage your kids to eat as many vegetables as possible and decrease the amount of grains. Finally, children are encouraged to get sixty minutes of vigorous activity every single day!

Have you seen this new food pyramid for kids?! How do you feel about it? I’m now on a mission to get them to eat EVEN more vegetables!!

Edited to add that a supplement of Omega-3 and a multi-vitamin might not be a bad idea!
