Rakhi is an indian festival dedicated to the brother-sister relationship. It symbolizes a sister’s love and prayers for her brother’s well-being, and her brother’s lifelong vow of protection.
My family celebrates this occasion with great joy every year. As long I can remember my dad has received a little envelope in the mail from his sisters in India. In it was a small red rope, a little bit of sugar and red powder. As a representative for his sisters, I would tie the rope around his wrist, place a dot of the powder on his forehead and a small amount of the sugar in his mouth. When my little brothers came into the picture I would do the same for them … and now that my little G1 has her G2 she will tie Rakhi on him. Its a beautiful and wonderful occasion that I am thankful to have in my life.

So this thursday I am especially thankful for my brothers … as well as my Indian heritage that introduced me to such wonderful celebrations.
