Guest Post by my good friend, Katia Hage, who was one of the first parents to ever “befriend” me at my kids’ school. She is one amazing person and can kick my ass in a deadlift any day of the week!
Little did Rachel Mickelson know when she approached me to join Crossfit CDR last December, that I was hitting rock bottom. I have been married for 10 years, living in a country that I was struggling to relate to, barely had any friends. I was blessed with three energetic and lively boys, who had their own set of demands and challenges. Some of my family lived near by, and it required from me a certain set of expectations that I could not really get away from. In a word, I was done, burnt out, and found myself unable to move forward in my life. It was definitely time for a wake up call.
I do not consider myself an athlete. Sure I have had some one on one personal training, did a class in martial arts, and rode my bike every once in a while. But nothing prepared me physically or mentally to a Cross Fit class. If it wasn’t for the enthusiasm and the energy of both Calvin and Rachel Davis, I don’t think that I would have come back to the next foundation class, or to another group class. Then there was words of encouragement like “go for it” and “you can do it!”, and it started reflecting into my daily life. I owe so much to all those wonderful athletes that I have met in the box : Leta, Steve, Penny, Rachel, Phil, Hillary, Claudia, Nica, Misuk, Anna. And my trainers are phenomenal. They kept pushing my pre-set limits, my mental barriers, because they saw something that I failed to realize : that I had in me what it takes to be an athlete.
As of today, I go 5 times a week to the 5 am class. I have regained my self confidence, my self respect, and most importantly I feel in control of at least my body and my mind. I look forward to every class, even dream about the moves at night. I was able to learn how to jump rope, something I never did in my entire life. I conquered every fear and learned to ride a road bike, with cleats on, in 2 days, and rode a 36 mile loop for my first ever ride. And every day is a yet another chance for me to set a new PR, or to learn a new skill.
