Preventing Type 2 Diabetes can be Tasty and Fun!

Finding out that my little cousin is a Type 2 Diabetic was a rude awakening to our family last November. The diagnosis made me realize that this disease can develop in anyone, and that our chances of avoiding it are greatly affected by the choices we make every single day. According to Syracuse’s St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center , more than 215,000 kids, and over 10% of all women my age and older (mid-20’s) are already diabetic! This is in addition to climbing obesity rates, which just confirms that we all need to be proactive in ensuring our long-term health.

Get Up and Go!
Even though the traditional New Year mark is behind us, it is never too late to start developing healthy habits! Regular exercise is critical for your overall health; your body was meant to move! The most important thing you can do for your body is make physical activity a part of your daily routine. Making exercise fun keeps adults interested and helps kids to develop great life-long habits. Also, I’ve found that letting the kids call the shots keeps them interested for hours. Here are some of our personal favorites:

- video games with motion sensors let us play sports, games, and even  learn to dance without leaving home!
- walking to the store, riding bikes, tossing a Frisbee or ball in the yard
- weather-related activities (swimming in the summer, sledding and skiing in the winter)
- building forts

- having large neighborhood-games of soccer, kickball, volleyball, capture-the-flag, tag, etc!

The Right Stuff
Exercise goes a long way towards fighting obesity, but it isn’t everything. Healthy foods give your body the best fuel to burn. For me, this meant getting rid of the chips and candy that I had stashed around the house; junk food is tempting to everyone, especially my little cousins. Eating less sugar and salt, baking instead of frying and saving sweets for an occasional treat are simple ways to commit to healthy eating. What’s more: once you start experimenting with all of the great recipes out there, you won’t even miss the things you used to crave. A few of our favorite snacks:

- Fruits compote makes a decadent treat
- Bruschetta (slice and toast some bread, top with your favorite vegetables!)
- Pizza loaded with vegetables and lighter meats like chicken and turkey

- Cauliflower mashed “potatoes”

Preventing diabetes doesn’t have to be bland and boring: just cut out the junk and go have some fun. I promise that you’ll find your healthier lifestyle is also a happier one!
