Unicorn Horns and Boats

Both of Andrew’s recipes were sweet treats and were quite clever for a young creative mind. Our shopping list included:
Ice cream cones
Green icing
Rice Krispie treats
Chocolate chips
Chocolate frosting
Chocolate ice cream (we had this already)
The first three ingredients were for the unicorn horns and the rest were for the boats.

We made the boats first. Andrew wanted chocolate frosting to represent the water so we spread that on the foil first. Three Rice Krispie treats spaced out atop that represented the boats. Melted chocolate chips were spread on them and chocolate chips (actually Hershey kisses) were set atop—masts? Each end had strawberries which made the full length of the boat and between the boats was chocolate ice cream. We had to freeze it to keep the ice cream from melting and to loosen the frosting; later we realized we should have put them in the fridge to harden and added the ice cream at the end.

The unicorn horns were simpler but had more complications.

He wanted the marshmallows to be roasted, but I couldn’t produce a campfire on short notice. We don’t have a gas stove, so I told him we’d have to use candles. He agreed and promised to be very, very careful (he was).

He also didn’t realize that green icing wasn’t available in our grocery store. Instead we got white frosting and used the food coloring at home. However, once we started adding the food coloring, Andrew wanted to add drops of all four colors, red, yellow, blue and green, in roughly equal portions to see what color they would make. When they made a drab green-gray color, he added more green and yellow. He wasn’t pleased with the color, so he said I could use this color for my horn. For his own, he used yellow drops only.

The frosting coated the outside of the cone and the marshmallow perched on top. As Andrew found out when he tried to eat his, it was a bit complicated to eat without getting covered in frosting.

We ate them after his mom arrived so she could see his completed creations. They weren’t perfect, of course, but that’s what experimental cooking is all about. I’m only sorry I had no way to take a picture for posterity.

Now I need to find a use for most of a bag of marshmallows, 9 ice cream cones and a third of a tub of olive green frosting…
