Swine flu update and a burning question

Posted Jun 24 2009 7:01pm

We have 12 new cases of swine flu, raising the total to 55, and some of these cases are not linked to travel, a sure indication that the virus is spreading the the  community. Even in our little suburb I have spotted the first surgical masks and gloves on people.

More detailed news here: http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNews/World/Story/STIStory_390284.html

The arrival of the virus in Wellington brought with it a burning question: How susceptible to the virus am I????  Although I don’t have reason to panic (yet) I was wondering if the Amitriptyline made me in any way more vulnerable to picking up viral infections. It’s generally known that immunosuppressants have that effect on your body so the question is: Is Amitriptyline an immunosuppressant drug?

The information on the Medsafe leaflet was pretty inconclusive so I searched the internet for more information and the answer seems to be ‘no’ although I want that verified by my rheumatologist on Thursday.

I must say I struggle with the concept of being informed on a ‘need to know basis’ only. I appreciate that they don’t want you to worry unduly but given the circumstances this is probably a pretty valid question. I know that all my Lupus friends are worrying their heads off at the moment. Okay – Lupus is a different condition to mine but we’re generally on the same meds (and we’ve all become doctors, pharmacists and chemists in our own right).

Trusting in the Lord, the Great Physician,

KWF
