I love looking for Easter Eggs in movies. I hadn't really though about recurring sounds from stock libraries until yesterday. I already knew that movies tended to reuse the same call of a red-tailed hawk, and that bugged me since it is often used for bald eagles who have a very whiny and not-very-intimidating call. While listening to the radio, I learned that I've heard this one in lots of movies without knowing it. You probably have, too.
The Wilhelm scream was originally recorded in the '50's and used in several movies that decade. It was later revived by the sound editor for Star Wars and has been used scores of times since. I'm amazed how many of them I've seen. It has also been used in commercials, television shows, and video games. This has been one busy scream.
I leave you with a YouTube compilation of some of its appearances.
