Does the median nerve run up to the shoulder and can it be inflammed from the wrist to the shoulder

I have recently been diagnosed with severe carpal tunnel syndrome.  the problem is the pain extends through my elbow and up to my shoulder. I am supposed to have surgery to fix the carpal tunnel im wondering if the rest of the pain will diminish after surgery.

I also have hypothryroidism and wonder what foods would be good to eat and to avoid.
