I know I probably shouldn't be concerned about the happenings behind the scenes at Borders anymore. Yet I still have friends working there and every Friday I see some of them, so I can't help but hear some of the gossip and news. This week I even stopped by the store on my way to take the GRE, so I picked up more tidbits.
The biggest news was the second major round of layoffs for the year, this time from the corporate offices. More than 250 jobs were cut this time from every department. This follows the termination (which I missed until I read the linked article ) of several Vice Presidents last month. I can guarantee that some of the losses were people that I dealt with routinely and I hate that. I also learned that the stores in Australia and other South Pacific nations were recently sold off, though the company is apparently holding onto the ones in Dubai and Puerto Rico.
Am I surprised? Not really.
Does this explain why my former boss is reported to be quite tense lately? Partly. The rest can probably be attributed to the continuing list of changes that she is being asked to make at store level with an ever-dwindling allowance of staff members.
Do I miss it? Well, I miss access to all the books. And some of the people I don't see as much as I would like. But otherwise, no, not at all.
