Bah. I'm reading Dr. Wurtman's article on Fibromyalgia, new drugs & weight loss. She says it causes one to eat out of control.

Why do all the Fibromyalgia/weight sites contradict? Why do people/drs assume Fibromyalgia patients overeat? It's a knee-jerk reaction; you're fat so you overeat. If you eat 5000 cals less you MUST lose a pound. We're cookie-cutter people and calories work the same for everybody.
I have had Fibromyalgia for almost 22 years. I started out at 140 and am now about 220. I am 5'4 and female.
I am so frustrated. No diet works. I can't exercise much. It causes relapses and I hate being stuck in bed for days.
Atkins worked for a long time. I lost all my weight and loved it. I kept it off for 8 years. Then about 6-7 years ago, a doctor gave me a low dosage of anti-depressant to help with pain and I gained 40 pounds in a month. I asked my pharmacist if the med caused weight gain and he said it certainly did. He asked, didn't my doc warn me? NO!! The weight kept piling on even though I immediately stopped using it. And contrary to popular thought, I DID NOT EAT ANY MORE while gaining. I was on Atkins the ENTIRE time. I ate no cake, no sugars, I did not binge once. That really is the beauty of the Atkins diet. You are not hungry and you are in control. Since then, Atkins won't work for me.
I even tried Weight Watchers. I gained. So they recommended cutting out 200 cals a day. I still gained. I kept cutting calories till I was eating 800 cals a day. 800!! I was so hungry I was walking around bent over double. I did that for 5 SOLID MONTHS!!! And lost 1 POUND!!
Then some genius said my body must have resisted losing because it went into 'starvation mode'. OK. Then tell me this: If i'm GAINING at 900 cals a day, and STOP GAINING at 800 cals a day, due to my body going into 'starvation mode', WHAT IS THE MAGIC NUMBER INBETWEEN WHEN I CAN LOSE? Doh!!
I don't snack. I don't eat potato chips or ding-dongs. I won't eat crappy food. I like homemade things. I don't like salted food, even popcorn. I avoid sugar. If I really want something sweet, I eat a small square of chocolate, like 1/8 of a bar. And that is very rare. I don't drink. smoke or cuss, and I have given up on meds. I'd rather live in pain than the side effects.
My mom, who is 120lbs, says I eat less than she does.
Since I've given up on diets, I eat like this:
Breakfast: 1 small bowl whole wheat cereal, no sugar. (The label says ing: whole wheat. Period.) Perhaps a tbl of raisins on top, with fat free milk. Or 1/2 cup oatmeal cooked with 1 cup water. 1 tbl raisins stirred in.
Lunch: 1 burrito, approx 300 cal. Or 1/2 sandwich made with whole wheat bread, some good low sodium lunch meat, usually turkey breast, and a very small amount of mayo. 1 fruit.
Dinner: Sometimes a TV dinner, about 350 cals (if I can't cook). If I cook, I am careful about portions. I am very aware of calories. I have absolutely no problem with will power.
I don't eat in-between meals, but if I'm really hungry I'll eat an orange or something. But that's perhaps once or twice a week.
I do not think eating like this should cause me to gain. When I look into a mirror I see a stranger. My husband wants me to lose. So do I!!
I plan to ask a doctor for help. But if he hands me a diet pamphlet with a calorie chart and tells me to exercise...well pray I don't flip.
