TIME magazine recently reported on the latest American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) statistics of the top cosmetic surgery procedures performed in 2013. Ranked third in the chart after breast augmentation and nose reshaping, eyelid surgery had increased by 6% from 2012. The number of eyelid surgical procedures performed in 2013 stood at 216,000. Cosmetic eyelid surgery is a great option for individuals looking to resolve tired or puffy eyes and loose and sagging skin or bags under eyes. Lower blepharoplasty removes excess skin, muscle, and fat and repositions the corner of the eye. In some cases, the entire lower eyelid may be replaced. Other related procedures include lateral tarsal strip eyelid repositioning, fat sliding procedures and resolving the tear trough through ablation. Upper eyelid surgery is performed to remove excess fat deposits that appear make the eyelids look puffy.
Your eyes and eyelids greatly affect your facial appearance. Puffy and tired looking eyes can make you look older. Blepharoplasty rejuvenates the area around the eyes and makes you look more alert and rested. The rising popularity of double eyelid cosmetic procedures is fueled by the fad among Asians to look Westernized and boost confidence. Double eyelid or upper blepharoplasty is performed to create eyelid folds using various types of incision methods. In one case, a young Korean girl went under the knife to make her eyes look bigger because she and her mother thought that looking pretty would help her “get ahead”.
Technological advancements have improved the safety and efficiency of eyelid surgery procedures. There is an increasingly positive outlook towards plastic surgery procedures performed for aesthetic reasons. Given all these factors, it would not be surprising if the demand for blepharoplasty continues to rise. Of course, it’s crucial that the procedure is performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon with vast experience to ensure optimal results.
