When trying to lose weight and burn fat you have to be very conscious of the amount of sugar you consume. If you body is processing sugar, it simply will not be able to burn fat. This is why refined foods such as white sugar and all the foods that are loaded with them are the first to go. White bread, most processed foods and pop all falls into this category as well. But what about fruit?
Most people are surprised when they go on the Atkins diet or the South Beach diet in an attempt to lose weight, that they have to stop eating fruit as well. Generally speaking this is a temporary issue but there is a good reason for removing most fruits from your diet during the initial stages in a diet plan. Fruit is high in sugar (fructose)! Is fruit healthy? Of course it is. It is full of vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants. Will it slow down your weight loss goals though? Yes it will. Instead of fruit, consume vegetables. Vegetables are much lower in sugar and higher in fiber than most fruits. This is exactly what we are looking for when dieting.
The exception to the rule is berries. Berries are super high in fiber and a nutritional value while being low in sugar (fructose). Consuming a handful of berries each morning will keep you healthy, regular and help satisfy that fruity craving most health conscious people get. They will not prevent you from burning fat and losing weight. Plus, they taste awesome!
I prefer blueberries, blackberries and raspberries. Most of the time I add them to plain yogurt or protein powder to jazz up the flavour and increase the nutritional value. I try to avoid most strawberries as they are sprayed with pesticides very heavily. So next time you hit the grocery store or better yet the farmers market, make sure to pick up some tasty berries!
