what would you call an arm muscle that broke off the shoulder bone?

My husband was working and heard a pop in his arm and he was told that the muscle in his arm popped of his shoulder, literally broke off and is sitting in the bottom of his arm. I am wondering what this is called>, and what it may be caused from?
