The people have spoken! We had the first ever unanimous decision from last week's Poll:
'What do you drink when you exercise?'
94% Water
6% Vitamin Water
0% Red Bull
0% Coffee
I was a little surprised by the results of the poll because the popularity of sports/energy drinks is wide spread throughout the fitness and health club industry. Many average Joe and Jane exercisers are seen trying to 'Be like Mike', guzzling their favorite flavor of gatorade, powerade, or vitamin water. These drinks are also chugged by non-exercisers, drunk multiple times a day, and even on a non-workout day.
Do you really need a sports drink?
The ideal fluid replacement is cool water (not cold or warm as they both take longer to pass through the body)
There appears to be no physiological benefit from carbohydrate consumption for athletes participating in events less than 1 hour long.
The answer for the majority of us is, NO. The flavor does help promote drink more water, but all we are getting is more calories!
Gatorade - 200 calories per 32 oz bottle
Powerade - 312 calories per 32 oz bottle
Vitamin Water - 125 calories per bottle
Other low-calorie options for fluid replacement:
Squeeze a lemon, lime, or orange into your water bottle
Add a splash of your favorite sports drink to your water
Try Propel Fitness Water
Try Powerade Option
Guys, don't drink back your workout! Stick with water...
