What exercise is safe for people with osteoporosis?

I know that weight bearing exercise is good for strengthening bones, but my doctor told me that it's too high a risk since I keep getting stress fractures (just from walking, nothing too high-impact).

I am an ex-dancer so being inactive is really hard for me- what exercise is safe to do? I am planning on joining a gym to do aqua aerobics, but would like to incoporate other forms of cardio and strength training into my routine.
