What can people who are addicted to working out to do control it?

Posted by Lindsey J.

Is working out like other addictions?

Anorexia athletica is when people feel like exercise = life. Most will work out intensely even if they are injured or sick. When not in exercise mode, these people feel ashamed and guilty.

Any thoughts/comments?

I think it's the same. I struggled with compulsive exercise- most of which I don't enjoy, I work through pain/injuries and the compulsion to workout/guilt if I don't leads to all kinds of intense emotions.

The question is, would the emotions be there anyway? Obviously there is a driving force behind the exercise, whether it's anxiety or depression (or anything else) so maybe the guilt from NOT exercising is the same feelings manifested in another way? Just a thought.
