Mindy Mylrea’s Action Packed/Interval Express workout kicked my butt last year and, in doing so, earned the honor of being our first 5-star rated DVD. It takes a lot to impress the FBGs because we try so many workouts, but Ms. Mindy definitely stands out in a crowd. She’s not afraid to create DVDs that will make grown men and women weep and that even the advanced may not be able to get through the first time. Her latest introduction, Workout!, is no exception.
Mindy’s as tough as a drill sergeant (although she's actually super nice— check out our interview!), but that really shouldn’t scare you away from her workouts. Advanced exercisers are guaranteed a challenge, but she’s great at giving modifications for beginners. Plus, if you’re just starting out, you’ll be able to gauge your progress as your endurance and strength grow.
The warm-up in Workout! means business, getting you warm while previewing many future moves, such as squats, lunges, faux jump rope and jogs. As Mindy says, there is no fancy choreography (which can be found in her other workouts ), but it’s all about simple moves done BIG and done FAST.
Workout! alternates between cardio and strength segments to get the most effective workout possible. Interval training is integral to Mindy’s philosophy, so she really pushes you during high-intensity 40-second cardio spurts. She gives you one simple move, such as a lateral jump, to do with as much intensity as you can muster. After a short break, you do the 40-second interval all over again. I also love that the DVD includes a Bonus Stations feature where she gives additional options for these short bursts so that you can switch it up each time you pop in the DVD. She does variations on squats and pliés until your thighs and butt want to give out. She seems to know you’re burning, because she is too, but that doesn’t stop her from pushing you. While Mindy uses the BOSU, step and Gliding discs in this DVD, they're not necessities, as she shows you how to do the moves with and without equipment. You will be sufficiently challenged with the modifications she shows, trust me. After all, squat thrusts and mountain climbers are going to be challenging whether you're gliding or not.
Mindy really emphasizes the mind/muscle connection in this workout. She also doesn’t let you get away with wimpy, flailing arms while you’re doing tough lower-body work. She makes you COMMIT. Moves don’t have to be complicated—when you’re putting your mind to it and giving it your all, you will get a fabulous Workout!
