How many times have you purchased a new piece of equipment and then been disappointed? If it's happened to you why not try it out before buying it. Most stores will have a demo piece set up. Just pull on your work out gear before heading for the store. When you get there try out the equipment on display. Okay, maybe you'll feel a little silly jogging on the treadmill in the window, but at least you won't be wasting money on equipment that doesn't work for you. Do you try out your equipment before buying?
That is an absolutely CRITICAL suggestion about trying out your equipment before buying. A few other pointers are as follows:
1) Do some research to find out the durability of the product you are considering as well as the type of support you'll get, should you need it after your purchase is made. I tried out the Total Gym and LOVED it. Got it home and worked out on it 3-4 times/week. After 2 months, one of the rollers broke and the equipment won't work. If has been THREE weeks I've been chasing the manufacturer to replace the roller.
2) Talk to others.. If you're purchasing from a small company, you can sometimes talk to other individuals who've purchased the product. Getting other's input is more realistic than talking to the sales rep, who's probably concerned about making commission on the sale and might not be the best non-biased informant for the product.
3) Ask about guarantees/warranties. Some companies stand by their products unconditionally. I spent a significant amount of money on the "treadclimber" by Bowflex and did not enjoy it after using it a few weeks. They took the product back, no questions asked.
