Traveling for work (or leisure) vs. You trying to be fit

Posted Mar 02 2011 7:37pm
It's always been difficult for me to manage a workout schedule when traveling for work (or leisure) and also  enjoying crazy good food!.... It's part of the traveling game that you MUST try all the wonderful food your destination has to offer... and as guilty as I am to indulging a little too much at times - I just can't help myself!  But here are a few tips I've learned that might help you keep fit while traveling - (these ideas probably work best if you're traveling for 1+ weeks)

1.  Pack your running kicks, extra socks and undies!
- I don't know about you, but my feet can get pretty sweaty.... nothing is worse than wearing the same dirty socks (or undies) two days in a row! Remember, you can wash your socks and personables in the sink of the hotel, and they should be dry within 24-48 hours!

2.  Set the alarms! And schedule a wake up call that's earlier than normal!
- Typically I'll do a minimum full hour of exercise at night when I'm home.  On the road (or in a different country), I find it easier to get in 30 minutes in the morning, and 30-45 minutes at night.  Not too many of us are early birds, but sometimes starting a good habit can only happen when you're out of your normal environment!  Even though I'm a zombie in the morning sometimes, even if it's just working the stationary bike or lifting some weights - it's good to give that metabolism of yours a kick start early in the day!

3.  Go on a hike at the park, mountain, urban roads, wherever!
- There's usually a really big local park, or hiking trail, wherever you travel.  Map it out and dedicate a weekend  morning to breathing in some fresh air.  Jog it!  Run like the wind~ or just walk as fast as you can, for as long as you can. :) and don't forget your camera!

4.  Hire (Rent) a bike!
- Use that smart phone of yours to find a local bike rental store.  And see to it that part of your touristy activities include a long ride around town/city on that bicycle.  :)  You'll get to places and cover more ground than if you were on foot!  And if you're with friends, you can always try to put in some sprints to race them to the next stop!

5.  Think ahead before you fill your body with deliciously fried goodness and thirst quenching .. *ahem* beverages!
- So the company is paying for your meals, eh?  Or you know you're going to that burger joint / fish & chips spot / awesome Italian restaurant that was featured on the Food Network!  That doesn't mean you should be eating like a monster EVERY meal.  Self control is the most vital aspect to maintaining that diet of yours.  If you know you're going out tonight to fill your stomach with a bunch of empty calories, it doesn't hurt to eat a salad and banana for lunch!

6.  Get a Gym membership!
- you might say, "WHAT?!  I don't even have one of those at home?"  Or... "I have one at home and don't even use it!" < IS THIS YOU?>  Well guess what!  YUP, go to the local gym and tell them you'd like to try out their gym for a week.  Most gyms have a trial period so take full advantage!

7.  Pushups & Situps are your friend!
-  Good old calisthenics are awesome.  Can you normally do 100 pushups?  Go for 200 today~  only 10?  Well - start shooting for 20!!! :)  If the weather is too muggy or there really are no other options, I can show you hundreds of pushup variations that will workout your entire upper body! (okay, maybe not hundreds - but I can show you a lot)

So I like el numero Seven - and will stop there.  Haha, not because I ran out of ideas (maybe) - but because this might just be common sense to you.  Even still - I hope it reminds you that it's all up to you! to be responsible to achieve your fitness goals, dreams and aspirations!

So be like Nike and JUST DO IT.

:)
