For the past few years, I have had trouble with my lower back. I was thinking walking and exercise will help strengthen my back muscles, in turn, preventing further injury down the road. Is my theory correct?
Try a Yoga Therapist. I'm not a doctor...but I think exercise would make a difference for your back. I would actually look into yoga. Find a yoga therapist who specializes in back issues. They will help you with exercise to gently strengthen and stretch your back. I have heard many people recover from injuries doing yoga. But make sure it is gentle yoga done with a qualified guide. Don't go to a power yoga class and try to force yourself into advanced backbends right away, or you could make things worse.
