Thursday Thoughts: Beginning Training Edition

Posted Jun 11 2009 7:59pm
This week kicks off my fall half-marathon training program with my first group run on Saturday morning. To celebrate that I have a few musings for today:
  • Tonight it's supposed to rain after work and I'm so looking forward to running in the rain. Last night it was supposed to rain and instead it was sunny - I was so disappointed although it was probably a good thing that I took the night off. It was so humid the other night (and my left foot was killing me - more on that later) when I ran that I pooped out after 1.7 miles. I may have to switch to being a morning runner with the heat but I don't know if I can give up sleep! Although it might improve my sleep to be on a better running schedule. Is anyone a morning runner who previously was an evening runner? How did you make the switch?

  • When I was running on Tuesday my left foot was being cranky. It didn't feel too bad at first but towards the end of the 1.7 miles I could tell it wasn't happy. I'm not sure what to do because it kinda feels like when I sprained it back in 2007 and had my foot wrapped for a little over a week. At least it's the beginning of my training so I can take it easy to get my foot back in action. Part of me wonders if it's from pushing myself at the 5 mile race on Saturday and I just need to build in some recovery time to my running? Maybe I need to start doing ice baths or more detailed cool down stretches?

  • I've been researching training programs and I'm not really sure which one to pick. I'd like to do weights at least twice a week and running 3-4 times a week with one day off. Is that enough? Is that too much? I'm hoping to get answers at my first Indy Runners Fall Race Training Program training run on Saturday morning. Any Half-Marathon runners, what training program did you follow and did you feel prepared for your race?

  • I have to admit I'm getting excited to get our "family" pictures (the hubs, myself and the dogs) back from Erin Hession!

I can't say enough good stuff about my running program thus far - I feel like I'm really coming along and will really be a strong contender this fall. I just need to not get overzealous and overtrain!
