When I got an invitation from health writer Ted Spiker to be a speaker from one of his classes at University of Florida on how to spread some of the editorial rush to future media professionals, I was honored.
As a health and fitness editor, I was thrilled to meet a writer that has written so many of the articles and books that I learned from. I pictured Ted to be a lean fitness and sports freak.
Who I met is a big guy who is passionate about writing on health and exercise. At that time he was doing some boxing training. Ted did not look like a runner to me, so I was thrilled when he told me about his blog for Runner’s World magazine: “ The Marathon Virgin ,” which is about his first marathon in New York City.
As any new runner, he has gone through all pain, blisters, euphoria, frustration, happiness and the sense of accomplishment and bonding that few sports bring.
I was sure that he could make it, but the big question was: Will he stay? Or will he be like the people who lose weight and regain it in less than a year?
Well, he hasn’t quit! Now he’s writing about the life issues that test you to see if you are a truly runner.
I was just like Ted Spiker at one time. I’m sure that you too may have been there. That’s what makes his blog so amazing, we can relate to him.
