The Multi-Vitamin

Recently, I have had a number of clients come to me with questions about vitamins and taking a daily multiple vitamin.

To answer this question we should go back to the prehistoric times of vitamins: 1968! This is where it all began with the first ever edible Fred, Wilma, Barney, and Betty - The Flintstone Vitamins.


So if Fred was with us today, would he say -


Yaba - daba - do or Yaba - daba - don't take a multi-vitamin?


Well, Fred worked for Slate Rock and Gravel Company as a Bronto Crane Operator not as a dietitian...and neither do I, but here is what we have heard from other professionals and resources.
  • Vitamins are nutrients you must get from food because your body can't make them from scratch.

  • Vitamins are also the catalysts for chemical reactions and physiological processes in the human body

  • Vitamins do not give you a Bam - Bam of energy or pep, it's just a marketing ploy.

  • Most multi-vitamins are usually mega-doses of what you actually need

  • Vitamins A, D, E, & K are fat-soluble, meaning they stay in your fat cells for a period of time, which can make high doses of these vitamins toxic.

  • You still may need a multi-vitamin even if you eat a well balanced diet

  • Always consult a registered dietitian and/or your physician before taking an supplements.
