proper form is so so important when working out. there are so many people who do exercises wrong or too fast and end up injuring themselves as a result. don't let that be you!
lunges are one exercise that so many people do incorrectly. i always tell my clients and classes to make a 90 degree bend as you lunge, keep your back straight like you are up against a wall, and pull your abs in.
lunges can be a great lower body exercise, if done properly. there are also lots of variations and ways to spice up the usual lunge so you are working multiple body parts all at the same time.
