Teaching kettlebell training to women for fat loss and improving muscle tone

Posted Sep 07 2008 7:58pm
As you can probably guess right now I am a pretty huge fan of kettlebells and kettlebell training, but what you may not know is that for the longest time my fiance had never even picked up a kettlebell despite seeing me use one for years. Why not? Well, she isn't really into exercising and doesn't have one of her own.

What a lot of women do not realize though is that kettlebells are not just for men, in fact they will lean out and tone up any women incredibly fast! Much faster than traditional cardio methods ever could. I think some women are intimidated by the look of kettlebells or they only see the big heavy ones. Well that is a shame because a woman who trains with kettlebells can develop a lean and firm body in no time!

So how did I get my fiance to start training with kettlebells? First off, I signed us up in kettlebell class. This is something we will do together so she likes that. I also bought her an 18 lbs kettlebell to practice with at home. Now she has a kettlebell class that she doesn't want to embarrass herself at and a kettlebell at home to practice with. Perfect.

Like all people trying something new, they can develop an opinion of it very quickly so you have to make their first experience fun and rewarding. I decided to a really simple workout with her of swings and presses. I would do a set to demonstrate and then she would do a set copying me. Teaching the swing is the first step to learning how to use a kettlebell and will make your butt sore the next day. A sore butt is something all women want because it means they are toning it! Once she had the swings down and was sweating it was time to teach the press.

I had her get the kettlebell to her shoulder on her own. The result was an ugly two handed clean that we will work on later. Once at her shoulder she was very scared to press it over head so I put my hands on her kettlebell and elbow to support her. By the second set she was blasting it overhead and felt fine. We did a few sets of presses and then went back to swings to finish off.

The whole workout probably only lasted 20 minutes but it was enough to teach her the basics and hopefully keep her wanting more! I really believe that is the key when introducing kettlebells to someone, keep it short and simple! Don't kill them and don't try to teach them everything at once or you will crush their confidence.

My fiance will now be training with her kettlebell twice per week in class plus here and there at home. If she sticks with it she will really lean out and tone up within about 4 weeks. So if you are a woman or know one who wants to improve their physique try kettlebell lifting. It won't make women all big and will make them lose fat so what is to lose?
