Surviving the Airport Food Court

Posted Nov 29 2008 12:27pm
I'm in Chicago right now, writing my last post before my family and I go to Rome and Barcelona for our family vacation! On Friday, I flew from Washington, D.C. to Chicago to spend the weekend and en route faced a tricky situation:

Eating at the Airport Food Court!

Many of us professionals travel for work and all of us ultimately travel for weekend trips and vacations. Thus we all have experienced the joys of traveling: layovers, flight delays, and connecting flights just to name a few.

During these 'joys' we are bored and trying to waste time...all of a sudden we hear something? Its the Airport Food Court calling your name! Laaaaance, Laaaance. You fight the urge as much as you can, but it wins in the long run. Here is what I encountered in the D.C. Ronald Regan Airport.

Airport Temptations:
Panda Express - Asian food
Famigilia - pizza and Italian food
PotBellys - sandwiches
Edy's - ice cream
Sam's Brewhouse - casual American restaurant & bar
Fudruckers - hamburgers
Auntie Annie's - pretzels

As I pass by each establishment, my mouth begins to water and stomach begins to growl. What am I going to do? All of a sudden, through the desert of fast food and grease, I see my Oasis!

Cibo
Express - Gourment Market

It was Lance's Mecca, I was home. Wraps, salads, sandwiches, nutrition bars galore! But, what does one do if they are in a small airport or weren't lucky enough to have a Cibo Express. I inspected the our original temptations to look for the top 'Choices' for you!
  • Water bottles - Every restaurant!
  • Fruit cup or piece of fruit - Familgilia, Fudruckers, Auntie Annie's, PotBellys
  • Trail Mix - Airport book & souvenir store
  • Turkey on wheat -PotBellys
  • Grilled Chicken - Sam's Brewhouse, Fudruckers
  • Steamed Veggies - Panda Express
  • Yogurt -Fudruckers, Familgia
  • Bag of pretzels -PotBellys
  • Nutrition/Protein Bars - Airport book & souvenir store
Its a great idea to put together a balanced snack or meal from a few of the different places.
  1. Water bottle from PotBellys
  2. Grilled chicken salad from Cibo Express
  3. Fruit cup from Familgia
Finally, when snacking or eating at the airport think of:
  • What did I already eat today?
  • When is my next meal?
  • Is there anything served on the flight?

Next time from Italy, Ciao!
