“The “ SPINODYSSEY ” concept began with Delia Thompson and Amelie (Amy) Babkie, two fitness professionals in southwestern Connecticut seeking a way to celebrate the dawn of the new millennium while helping a good cause. Inspired by their students’ enthusiasm for indoor cycling, the popular group fitness indoor cycling workout, and the battle against breast cancer being waged by Delia’s sister, the two hosted the first “Millennium Ride” on January 1, 2000. The first event featured 50 bikes and riders, and raised $5,244, all of which was donated to American Cancer Society Breast Cancer Research.” The next year “Millennium Ride” became “Spin Odyssey” and has continued to go strong ever since.
Last year was the first year I participated in this event. They raised $410,000,that is the most money this event has raised so far. They are hoping to far surpass that this year!Last year I rode for 3 hours. Once I got off the bike last year I said to myself “I can do it, I can ride for 3 more hours and next year I will. So, this year I will be riding for the full 6 hours!
The reason I ride: When I was 12 years old my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a very scary time in my life, I didn’t understand what cancer really was and I had a lingering fear I was going to lose my mom. Luckily my mom beat her battle with breast cancer and has been in remission for over 10 years.
While my mom was battling breast cancer she joined a support group where she met her friend Stacey. Stacey became a huge part in my mom’s life and in turn became a huge part of my family’s life. Her and her husband would come over on Christmas and for dinners and parties. Stacey had a wonderful energy, she was someone you wanted to be around. She was always cracking jokes and busting on my dad for being a Red Sox fan! Stacey went into remission shortly after my mom did but a few years later the cancer came back and this time it had spread. She was one touch cookie! She fought a tough battle and unfortunately lost her battle in September 2010. So in honor of her battle her husband, myself, my mom, brother, my dad and many of Stacey’s friends and family members will be spinning for her on March 4th.
Not only do I ride for Stacey but also for my mom and grandmother who have beat breast cancer and for everyone else who have beat or lost the battle with breast cancer!
