While its not something I advise, there can be times when it might actually help the pain. Now I am no chiropractor or doctor here and I am only using myself and my own pain as an example. Everyone has to listen to their own body and make their own judgment call when it comes to working out when you are in pain.
For the past week, my lower back pain has been affecting me. I went to the chiropractor last Thursday and while he did some adjustments, I knew I was not fully adjusted and would have to go back. I have been dealing with this lower back pain on and off for over 10 years and it has just become a way of life for me. But in listening to my body, I know when its time to go in and get an adjustment. Some times I can do for months, and sometimes its only weeks.
Some people may think its because of all the crazy workouts that I do. But I don’t think that at all-its just my body. A couple of years ago, I had pulled a groin muscle, which in turn ended up putting pressure on my lower back. That was the worst that my back had ever been. I was going to a massage therapist and chiropractor regularly for almost 6 months. Well, that pain is back. Its more annoying than anything. It hurts to sit still for too long (which I have problems with anyhow..a little ADD here…) AND it gets more painful the more I stay away from exercise.
Yes, in this case, exercise actually makes it feel better! This morning I woke up and was so stiff! What happens is that the pulling starts in right side of my lower back. It then pulls all the way down my glute muscle and wraps around my leg, causing a bruised feeling along the side of my leg. It hurts to walk, hurts to sit and drives me absolutely batty! So, instead of NOT exercising, I do slow movement excercises for my lower body to help stretch out those muscles.
This morning I did some slow squats and split squats and then stretched. Not only did it feel better, I felt better because I was able to get in a little bit of a workout. I don’t over do it, but do just enough to releive the pain and pulling. I am going back to the chiro on wednesday and am pretty sure the adjustments will help. If not, at least I know that if DOES go away and what I can do to help deal with the pain until it goes away.
So while it depends on the type of pain we are talking about, I do think that to a degree, working through the pain will actually help it! Make sure to talk to your doctor first though…
