Should We Exercise When Ill?

Posted by Steven D.

DAYTON, Ohio - This is the time of year when health clubs see an increase in the number of people coming in to work off extra pounds and inches gained during the holidays. Unfortunately, it is also the time of year when there is an increase in the number of people with cold or flu symptoms.

How do you know if it is safe to exercise when you aren't feeling well? A simple checklist can help you decide:

Do you have a fever? Fever is an indication that your body is under stress, as it is fighting the illness. Before making the decision to work out, take a minute to check your temperature.

If the reading is 99.5 degrees or above, do not exercise, as under these conditions working out will only further stress your immune system and hinder your ability to recover as quickly. Being active elevates body temperature, and if it is already high to begin with, then an increased risk of heatstroke exists. With no fever present, it is generally considered safe to exercise.

When in doubt (or if I don't have a thermometer handy), I always use the 5-minute rule: I commit to training for just 5 minutes.

Usually, just getting moving makes me feel a whole lot better and I continue my workout as planned. But if at the end of that time, I feel worse - I stop (guilt-free, too, I might add!)
