Work out time is ME time. I personally like to work out alone, something that I learned many years ago. Getting into the rhythm of the workout, listening to the music on my IPod, which a few years ago was a CD player and before that a portable cassette player, has always been my preferred getaway.
As I slowly elevate my warm up I begin to feel my heart rate and body temperature begin to rise and my joints and body begin to relax. As I listen to my breathing - and my music - I begin to let myself get submersed in the moment, letting the day that is behind me go and forgetting about the day that is still to come. For the next 20-45 minutes I am having ME time.
ME time is wonderful - setting ME time is another story.
As a Personal Trainer many people think that all I do is workout all day. Between training clients, managing the business side or looking for new business - the day is very full. On top of that I have a house to maintain and a teenage daughter to raise. There are many days that ME time gets missed.
Besides the almost immediate psychological benefits of exercise - the reduced stress and relaxation of the body as a whole - the true benefits of working out and being physical are only fully appreciated and rewarded if consistency is your guide. Without consistency you will go nowhere really quick.
With the importance of getting away - if for only 20 minutes - for a more relaxed and productive day - and the need to be consistent for truly great physical benefits, you would think that setting ME time would not be an issue, Yet, that ME time still gets missed.
I truly believe that exercise should be at the top of everyone's priority list - above career, above family, above spiritual concerns - basically at the top. If it is at the top of the priority list, every priority below it will benefit and grow.
If I truly want to be consistent I must schedule my ME time every day of the week - even schedule the days that I am not going to exercise. Penciling in my ME time and rating it high, on my "To Do" list, is a must. If at the end of the day there isn't a check mark next to "workout" on the "to do" list then I have not given it the priority that it deserves.
Put it on your calendar and check it off every day!
What priority do you give your exercise routine?
