Running diagnosis everything. Am I sick? Crappy run = sick. Am I better? Good run = better! Is X a good friend? Only if they cheer you on in a marathon. Should I break up with X? Oh yes, a good run will even tell you THAT.
So, I haven’t run in a week. I have barely moved in several days. I missed the kickoff meeting for our Half Marathon Long Run team and even had to be the reason for yet another schedule change of my Ambassador photo shoot.
On that note, people ask all the time if they should work out while sick. I cancelled a spin class date last week because I wasn’t feeling quite right and am I EVER glad I did. I would have shared my flu with 40+ workout junkies and probably passed out in class.
If you can’t go to work, get through your regular day’s activities, walk down the block, or get out of bed, PLEASE DON’T WORK OUT YOU CRAZY LUNATIC.
Also when you shouldn’t exercise if you:
Go ahead and do some light cardio (not HIIT, lifting, anaerobic, etc.) if you have a sniffle but energy, feel icky but have energy, maybe kinda have a cold but have energy for some light cardio.
You don’t “sweat out” a cold or a flu or anything else. You make it worse by depleting your body of fluids, energy, and electrolytes. If you are sick, stay home. Watch “Downton Abbey” and eat chicken noodle soup.
Be sick. And don’t go to spin class and get everyone else sick.
Now go out and run.
(I’m going to try not to pass out in class. Yay, flu.)
