Realistic Goal Setting

Posted by Swati S.

The key to achieving your goals lies in setting realistic goals. Here are some tips to help you along the way.

  1. Keep it simple. Avoid making drastic, sweeping changes that would be extremely difficult to carry out. So, if you have a sweet tooth, then do not make a plan that completely puts all sugar on hold.
  2. Do not just say that you will do it. PLAN HOW you will do it. For example, if you plan to exercise 20 minutes a day, then make sure you set aside a fixed time in the day when you know you will have the time to do that exercise.
  3. Finally, you know yourself best. So set goals that you know will work for you.

I used to constantly make grand, lofty goal lists that were completely pie in the sky, but for some reason, doing so gave me a sense of accomplishment, at least vicariously. Now I agree it's good to keep things simple and definitely put aside time during the week to work towards accomplishing your goals. I think when you start in the minor leagues (i.e., I will wake up at 6 each morning and go to the gym; I will try to take my lunch to work every day; I will call my mother at least twice a week from now on so I don't have to listen to her nagging about how I never call her), it becomes easier to work yourself up to the bigger stuff.
