Quit Drinking and Do it on your Own!

Has your overindulgence in alcohol created embarrassment for you and your family in both your personal and professional relationships? If so, then getting a grip on your drinking is the first step to quitting. It is difficult to quit drinking even at the best of times. On your way home from work, don't stop by the grocery store to purchase alcohol. If you head home immediately, once there, the desire to go back out will likely wane. When food shopping, buy it all at once instead of on a daily basis thus avoiding the potential impulse to buy alcohol. Try and frequent places where drinking is not permitted, like the movie theater or church. These are just a few of the things you can do to quit drinking and avoid the consumption of alcoholic altogether.

Begin chewing gum, eating candy, or anything to just keep your mouth busy at night. It is the same as giving up smoking, you need to exchange the habit with something different. Start to work out. Try going to the gym after work, or just return home and work out to music. Do not hang around with people who drink as a social habit. You can talk on the cell, but do not meet with them down at the pub or in a local club. I realize it can end friendships, but if somebody really loves you, they will do anything to support you.

You will only end up in trouble if you start to go back to the familiar places where you once drank. Stay out of relationships (if not already in one) so that you can spend time on yourself. A relationship can take the focus away from you and distract you from your goal of staying sober. If you are already in a relationship that is destructive do everything you can to end it. These types of relationships carry a great deal of emotional baggage that can only serve to remind you to take a drink when times get tough.
