Pushing Through the Barrier

Posted by Kenna M.

Time and motivation seem to be the two barriers to exercising. University of New Hampshire offers suggestions to overcome these barriers: 1) Overcoming Motivation: a) Add Variety to Your Exercise Program b) Join a Gym or Take a Group Exercise Class c) Find an Exercise Buddy d) Set Specific, Obtainable Goals 2) Handle Time: a) Make Time for the Activity b) Spread Your Exercise Time Throughout the Day c) Schedule Your Exercise Time as Though It Was an Important Meeting With Your Manager What do you do to stay motivated and make sure you create the time to exercise?

Great question!. Great question! I still honestly find it difficult to get motivated sometimes, but there are a few things that have helped keep me in the game: 1) Working out with a friend. Having a buddy motivate you is a great excuse to get up and running?particularly for someone like me, who used to be intimidated as hell by the gym. Also, it helps you keep a regular schedule, since you're not just accountable to yourself?you are also accountable to your friend. The support and encouragement that come with working out with someone else are also invaluable, and make the trek to the gym more fun. 2) Changing it up a little. Admittedly, it can get tedious to do the whole gym thing, so I like to alternate. Sometimes, I'll do yoga?other times, I'll do a 30-minute brisk walk. The latter is great because it's low-impact but still effective, and you can people-watch, enjoy the sun, and get your errands done in one fell swoop! 3) Working out in the morning. Face it, most of us who put it off till the end of the day are too tired to go to the gym, and end up not. I have found that carving out an extra hour or so in the morning for working out makes my entire day that much better.
Friends and Workout. Yes, I agree with working out with a partner. I play racquetball and that drives me to the gym. RB with another person, who is counting on you to be there, pushes me through the barrier. Morning workouts are definitely the way to get a jump on the day. I think in the mornings there is less of a barrier -- except for the fact you have to get up earlier.
