Protein

Posted Aug 24 2008 2:11pm
A little follow up on my natural food post . Someone asked me about protein powders and if they are okay to eat. YES! In fact, if you are lifting weights and truly not eating enough protein then you really should add protein powder to your diet. However, you may want to skip the protein bar.

Most protein bars are marketed as "health foods" but to be completely honest, many of them are just candy bars in disguise, loaded with sugars and processed fats. I have even found several brands of bars that were loaded with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). I have also found several protein bars that contained trans fats from artificial hydrogenated oils! This just boggles my mind. Two of the very worst food additives are in your "health" bar.

Also be aware of the "low carb" bars. They are often loaded with highly processed sugar alcohols . A lot of people frequently experience diarrhea and excess gassy problems from all of these sugar alcohols. Embarrassing moments anyone?

Protein bars don't have to be bad. There are some that are okay and they are a great choice when looking for a quick protein packed snack. Here is what to look for:

  1. Find a protein bar that is high enough in protein (at least 25 grams per bar), low in sugar and low to moderate in fat. Many protein bars on the shelves will be higher in fat (over 10 grams per bar), so make sure you read what type of fats are being used. Stay away from protein bars that contain saturated fats.
  2. Watch out for the amount of sugar alcohols which will be listed under carbohydrates. They will usually list carbs, fiber, sugar and then finally sugar alcohols.
  3. Taste is also a very important part of choosing a protein bar. If the bar doesn't taste great, then you will not want to eat it. Make sure to choose a few different types of flavors and different brands of protein bars before buying a huge box of them. Narrow down your favorite tasting ones and invest in a few boxes that you can store in your home and office for quick protein packed snacks.
