Pop Quiz! - Outer Thighs Pop Quiz!

Posted Nov 29 2008 12:25pm

Pop Quiz!

True or False:

You cannot exercise your outer thighs.

A. True

B. False

C. I give up, anatomy class was 100 years ago

I can see all my female readers right now - desperately crossing their fingers, toes, and even eyes in hopes that this statement is false.

Yes, I do understand all the possible repercussions of revealing the answer to this quiz. It may lead to female street looting and rioting across the world, but I think ya'll still need to know.

Let's all take a closer look below and find out the answer...

The answer istrue! You technically do not have muscle on your outer thigh.

Do you see that white band running down the outside of the thigh?

It's called your iliotibial band or IT band.  It's not a muscle and cannot be exercised, sculpted, or toned.

What you do have are muscles that attach to this band of connective tissue that can be worked:
  • Lateral Quadricep (front)
  • Lateral Hamstring (back)
  • Gluteus Maximus (upper back)
  • Tensor Fascia Latae (upper front)
So do you still think that side leg raises and repetitions on the leg abduction machine are actually working your outer thighs?
