Poll Revealed: Cardio Distraction

Posted Nov 29 2008 12:27pm
The votes are in and we have a winner. The outcome of this one was pretty obvious, but I wanted to see exactly what the results would be to my question of,

'How do you distract yourself from during a cardio workout?'

Poll Revealed

I don't want to expand on those that listen to music today (click here for more on music), but I do want to talk about people that read while they are working out. How can someone actually say they are really exercising if they can read a magazine, newspaper, novel or lecture notes? I've tried and I literally can't do it while I'm on any cardio machine. Is it just me or does your head bounce around too much to concentrate on that small of a font. I find that I end up reading the same sentence ten times in a row, I can't keep my place in the paragraph, and if I do make it through an entire sentence I usually am not sure of what I just read.

What's more amazing to me than people who read while they are doing cardio are the people that read while they are doing their strength training! Have you seen this? One of the bizarre things I have seen in the gym was a guy reading the paper (both pages open) while doing decline 'rocky style'sit ups.

The Reading Test

Similar to the 'Talk Test' where you can determine one's exercise intensity by their ability to speak, I am encouraging the 'Reading Test'. If you can read as easily as if you are sitting on the couch and there are no sweat drops on your pages, you ain't working hard enough!
