Physical Activity Versus Exercise

Posted Nov 29 2008 12:26pm
Our weekends are precious. 48 hours of work and responsibility free 'you time'. We have to cherish  every single minute before Monday morning as it if it were our last breath of air.

This weekend I spent 16 hours of my (and a best friend's) weekend painting my condo. Talk about fun with a captial F.

Not only did I learn that you can inadvertently get high from paint fumes if you don't open the windows enough, but also that painting 600 square feet is a heck of a workout. I really feel 'Daniel Son's' pain, when Mister Miyagi made the Karate Kid 'paint the fence'. Damn, if all painters sweat the way I did they must be ripped, but that's probably as likely as plumbers not showing crack.

With all the painting, I had no time to exercise. Which brings up an important topic...

Physical Activity Versus Exercise

Physical Activity Defined:
  • Any bodily movement produced by the muscles that results in energy expenditure (burning calories).
  • Example: Painting your apartment
Exercise Defined:
  • Physical activity that is planned, structured, repetitive, and structured
  • Example: Total body strength training for 30 minutes and then 30 minutes of running

Why is it important to know the difference?

When you can't exercise or you can't exercise as much as you would like to, try to be as active as you can - take the stairs, walk to work, just move your body because physical activity burns calories and can help you maintain/lose weight just like exercise.

If you are looking for more physical activity, just let me know -
I need someone to paint the second coat!
