One Of The Most Important Stretches...

Posted Dec 20 2008 7:19pm

...is theKneeling Hip Flexor Stretch!

Where Are They?

Why Stretch Them?
  • When we are in a seated position these muscles contract
  • We sit so much during a given day that these muscle can shorten and become tight to maintain this contracted position
  • When our hip flexors become short and tight they can tilt our entire pelvis forward
  • This forward pelvis can weaken your glutes and hamstrings
  • Also a forward pelvis will increase the arch of your lower back
  • This all puts you atgreater risk formuscle imbalances, injuries, and compensated movements!

How Do You Stretch Them?

  • One way is with a kneeling hip flexor stretch (pictured above), which can also be performed in a standing position
  • You are trying to feel a stretch in the upper thigh (pocket area) of the knee that is down
  • Straighten up your spine anddraw your tummyintight
  • The key is totuck your pelvis under(the opposite of arching your back, try to flatten your lower back) as you are holding this stretch
  • If you aren't sure how to tuck your pelvis, justsqueeze the gluteon the side that has the knee down

How Long To Hold The Stretch?
  • Try it twice for 30 seconds
