My legs

Posted by Jessica G.

The other day I went to the gym. No big deal. I went with my mom. She is trying to lose a lot of weight. She and my dad have a trainer. He said I could come one day they were coming and work out with them to see what I could improve on, tips, etc... When I'm at the gym, I like to work out everything. I start with cardio to get my heartrate up, then finish legs, then arms, then back/shoulders, then finish with abs. I like to do everything at once because then I feel like I did something extremely productive. When I feel the burn and the pain, I know I did something. If I were to go to the gym and it not hurt after or not sweat, I feel like I didn't do anything and am lazy.

Well, I did tag along while my mom was doing her work out with her trainer. They do it quite different. They do arms one day, legs another day, then back, have routine on machines, certain order, etc... Ok, I could give it a try. Basically, it started with 10 minutes on the stair stepper (HATE IT), 5 minutes on the bike, 5 minutes on the treadmill. I was wanting to try a little of everything. Usually, I just do 15 minutes on a bike. After that we got the medicine ball against a wall and did 50 slow 90 degree angled squats. I am not used to squats. I hate them. I like to work out my quads with machines. Well that almost killed me. Then we did machines focusing on quads and glutes. I felt like my legs were about to fall off. Like my knee caps were going to pop off or give out on me. I didnt get it. I have worked out my legs to that point before. Weird. I had done those machines before.

Anyways, the next day I woke up and could barely stand up. My legs DID NOT want to hold me up. To put it in perspection, it felt like someone had ripped my legs out, punched them, kicked them, hit them with a bat, etc.. then put them back on my body. That was the exact pain. Now, when I first started working out I had similar pain everywhere. I figured I could get through work, sleep, and it would be fine. Well guys, it is the THIRD day and the pain has NOT subsided. It is so bad that I want to go to the gym and work out my arms and legs and abs, but that my legs wont even hold up. It hurts to sit, climb on my bed, raise my legs, get into a car, touch, etc... They feel bruise and wounded and don't want to go back out to war (a.k.a. the gym). I don't know how I am supposed to drag myself there when I can barely move. There is only so much will power one can have. But when I don't go, I feel like a fat yucky lazy pig.

Your body is probably so "beat up" because you changed your routine. Our bodies get use to the same 'ol workout, so we need to change it occasionally. It's easy to get stuck in a routine because you get good with certain exercises, but change things every few weeks (depending on how often you go).
My workouts have become fairly routine, and I've wanted to change it up without going overboard and causing pain to my body. I've been in your exact situation before, so I can relate. It's not fun. What I've found myself doing is watching other gym-goers (discreetly, I don't want them to feel like I'm staring or judging) to see what kind of exercises they're doing for different parts of their body. Hooray to you for trying a workout with your mom's trainer, but now you also know that you should take it step by step. Perhaps use one or two of those exercises that you feel your body can handle and begin adding it to your gym routine. Good luck!
