Meet Your Muscles - Pectoralis

Posted Nov 29 2008 12:25pm
Muscles...some people want to build them. Some people want to tone them. Some people want to shrink them. Some people want to flex them at parties. Some people just want to have them. Meet Your Muscles gives you a unique look at some of your 430+ skeletal muscles.

Today's Muscle:
# 18, 19, & 20 - Pectoralis

Anatomy
  • Two muscles make up the Chest:Pectoralis Major and Minor
  • Pectoralis Major is the moresuperficial fan shaped muscle and it attaches to your sternum, clavicle and up into the shoulder.
  • Pectoralis Minor isdeeperand is thought to have greaterrole in upper body postureas it connects from your 3rd through 5th rib to your scapula.
Myth
  • There isno such thing as upper, middle, and lower chest- it all works together according to the All or None Principle ( the entire muscle and all it's fibers will contract together or not at all).
  • Incline, flat, decline presses and flyesdo put more stress on certain muscle fibers as the lines of resistance change, but (also because of the All or None Principle) youcannot spot tone or increase the size of a portion of the chest
Technique
  • Twisting your wrist  as you perform your lift will work the chest to a fuller extent. (See the exact wrist twist below)

  • A more narrowed hand positionwhile doing a chest exercise will elicit greater pectoralis major andtriceps brachii activation
Injury Prevention
  • Tightness, overuse, and/or overdevelopmentof chest muscles can all lead to shoulder pain, rounded forward shoulders, lengthened/weakened upper back muscles.
