Weight loss in Temecula, is an elusive endeavour, here as it is in the rest of America. Losing that last five pounds can be the hardest. After arriving at this point in your body transformation the physical and psychological obstacles have probably been overcome, especially if you have already lost large amounts of weight already. You know how to eat, you have a good exercise program and you are confident in your bodies ability to change.
That last 5 pounds? Do you really need to lose it? Here is a conversation I had recently with a client.
Client : I was reading an article the other day about how to lose that last five pounds.
Mark 7 : How do you know you have to lose 5 more pounds?
Client : I want to reach a certain weight.
Mark 7 : After losing five more pounds are you sure that is all your going to want to lose? What happens if after losing five pounds you decide you need to lose another five pounds?
Client : Because I only have to lose five pounds.
Mark 7 : O.K., what did the article say?
Client : It said to raise my activity level by 25% and decrease my caloric intake by 25%.
Mark 7 : Well your current program has you at 1200 calories and 6 hours of exercise a week. Following that rule you would need to drop your calories to 900 and increase your exercise to 7.5 hours per week, does that sound sensible or healthy?
Client : NO!
Mark 7 : You follow that plan and you decide you need to lose 5 more pounds. Now you have to drop your calories to 675 per day and increase your activity to 9.5 hours per week. Do you see where this is going?
Client: yes.
Losing weight is a hard enough without reading articles like this. The article was right in one respect, decrease calories and increase activity. That advice is true for anyone wanting to lose weight. It's simple math. What it doesn't know is where you are in your weight loss journey. It doesn't know all the variables of your particular program or endeavour. Articles like this only confuse the fitness enthusiasts and people trying to change their bodies.
You may be asking, does this client need to lose 5 more pounds. Only she can answer that question but as her trainer I can say no. together we have designed a program for her that is manageable for her lifestyle, she has made tremendous progress, and along the way she has learned a lot about how her body reacts to exercise and food. If she were to implement the "5 pound program", as stated above, would it realistically fit into her lifestyle. Probably not. My suggestion to her was to be satisfied with where she is and concentrate on increasing lean body mass and save that last 5 pounds for a special event, such as her sons graduation next year. At that time she can turn on the after burners and aim for that smoking hot physique she is imagining and can probably do it in about 3-4 weeks. After the event she can resume her normal program, and put the "5 pound program" back in her arsenal of body transformation exercise techniques. She can pull out this program each time their is a big event coming up, such as class reunions, weddings or romantic cruises with her husband.
