Keeping Your Fit Bottom Warm This Fall: Mizuno Women’s Breath Thermo

Posted Nov 09 2011 6:00am

Fall is my favorite time of year to run. Between the colorful foliage and the crisp air, no other time of year makes me want to lace up my sneakers more. But the weather can be a bit tricky. The other day I began a run in what was warm sunshine and ended it sopping wet in a beautiful fall downpour . So I’m always looking for gear that is light yet keeps me warm. Which is pretty much what Mizuno’s new Breath Thermo technology is meant to do. So, when they pitched it for us to try, I was ready to, well, run!

mizuno-running-top Mizuno Women’s Breath Thermo Running Crew

For sure, the Mizuno Women’s Breath Thermo Running Crew is a top for a runner with a runner’s body. Not overly forgiving, it hugs the body and leaves little to be concealed. However, the same properties that make you thank the heavens that you’re not a celeb with paparazzi capturing your every stride are the same elements that make this shirt so darn functional. As your body heats up, the shirt helps keep that warmth in, while also absorbing moisture. And if that isn’t enough, the shirt is also anti-bacterial and helps to “deodorize.” Which I so need. I have this weird—and less than pleasant—ability to smell like my dog after a run .

While it didn’t take my wet-dog smell away totally, it did improve it, and it was the perfect weight for a short 45-degree outdoor run. Not too heavy yet warm enough to allow you to keep your pace (instead of, you know, sprinting home to get indoors and make hot cocoa), I also loved the blue color and unique design and cut, even though I wish the sleeves were just a touch longer. Just be warned that if you have a little jiggle in your middle, this shirt will show it. At just about $60 , it’s a serious piece for a pretty game-on runner.

mizuno-tights Mizuno Women’s Breath Thermo Layered Tights

Now on to the bottoms for a full fall-running outfit! With tights, I expect for things to be, well, tight. And these Mizuno Women’s Breath Thermo Layered Tights are your quintessential running tights—plus. First, they have what I consider a must in all running tights: a small pocket to carry a key! Second, reflective logos and accents, which are a must now that it gets dark before I even think about leaving work for a late-day run. Third, they hug in all the right places. Okay, yes, they hug in all of the places, but in a really natural way that gives my ginormous calves the room they need . (Be free, muscular calves, be free!)

Lastly, they have the cool Breath Thermo technology that really does keep you warmer than most running tights. At about $65 , they are a splurge, but worth it for the serious fall runner. And by “serious,” I mean “runs a lot,” not “runs fast.” Because I would buy these, and I, my friends, am not a fast runner .

To my fellow runners out there, what are your favorite running pieces for fall? Tights? Jackets? Ratty long-sleeved T-shirts from college (we kind of love those, too)? Tell us all about it, yo! —Jenn
