There are different stages of obesity ranging from minor obesity to morbidly obese. Obesity can trigger many other health related issues making it a life threatening problem for some. The type of surgery that is best will be determined by several things with the most crucial being the stage of obesity.

The surgery that carries the highest risk but is the most effective would be the gastric bypass. Gastric bypass literally bypasses a big portion of the stomach with the intestine. This procedure reduces the size of the stomach to approximately one-third its original size, allowing the patient to be full quicker and with a lot less food. The smaller stomach allows the body to absorb less fat making the body use more and more of its fat stores.

An easier less encompassing surgery is the gastric lap band. A gastric lap band is an elastic band placed on the stomach. The band is tightened to make the stomach smaller. This surgery is usually done as out patient surgery and does not carry as much risk as the gastric bypass surgery. The lap band is only successful if the individual is committed to following the rules. The band can easily expand allowing the stomach to grow back to its original size. This surgery is designed for the less obese person but can be as effective as the gastric bypass is for the morbidly obese individual.

Surgery is a scary option but you need to choose whether you want to take the risk of having surgery or stay obese and fight the health problems and possible death. The most logical would be to have the weight loss surgery. There are doctors that specialize in weight loss surgery and can guide you to the best option for you.
