Introducing How Bad Do You Want It?

Posted Oct 29 2009 12:00am
Happy Thursday, guys! I want to introduce you to a new feature here on Karina Works It Out called How Bad Do You Want It? I'll be interviewing different people about their health and fitness goals--so, whether it's losing 50 lbs or training for your first marathon--I want to hear about it! I think it's a good way for us to support each other's goals. Plus that way, we can get to know each other better.

That being said, meet Stephanie, 24, a KWIO reader from Tampa, Florida.

Her Goal:
To lose 15 lbs
(I have to be realistic...I don't want to let myself down!)

In how long?
By Valentine's three and a half months

How bad do you want it?
REALLY BAD! Weight loss has always been a struggle for me. I've been a big girl all my life. I have diabetes now, I was diagnosed more than a year ago. The doctor was confident that if I lost enough weight, my diabetes could go away. It's time something changed.

Have you made any changes so far to accomplish your goal?
Yes I have. Smaller portions. No fried foods. Less bread (even though I'm totally addicted to sandwiches.) And I stopped drinking soda a few years ago.

What's your next step?
To begin exercising. I want to start walking three times a week. Also by learning how to not be extreme with a diet. I've dieted before (Atkins, calorie deprivation, the birdseed diet, you name it...) and have gotten results quickly. But I've learned once you cheat at that, it's really hard to stop. So this time I'm trying to make slow changes in my diet so that instead of just dieting for a few months, I can actually get used to the change gradually and hopefully stick to healthier choices for life. And I would also LOVE to find another alternative to my monthly chocolate cravings.

What helps keep you motivated?
Healthy competition with family members to see who can lose the most weight in a certain period of time (my sister and my cousin are also trying to lose weight) helps to keep me on track. I'm always up for that kind of challenge. Exercising in groups is great, plus having more people to cheer you on along the way, is very helpful. Also the skinny picture on the fridge trick works sometimes for me.

Is there any way we can help you out?
Yes. How do I get rid of my jelly rolls? That's what I want to know!

Hmmm...I'm still trying to figure that one out myself! I think what's been most helpful for me is getting 45 minutes of cardio three to four times a week. That and staying away from white bread and refined carbs in general has been really good for whittling away my midsection. But I'll get back to you with a more specific answer...
Thanks. I appreciate it!

So there you have it guys! We'll be checking in with Stephanie again in the next few months to see her progress. Our support will help keep her motivated, so leave her encouraging messages! And while we're at it: what are your health and fitness goals? I'm looking for someone for next week's How Bad Do You Want It? segment, so let me know!
