i need exercises that will not further injure an old femur fracture [above my knee] which limits my mobility.

i'm in my late 50's, and due to extreme stiffness & pain in my left knee from breaking my leg 8 years ago, i have limited mobility and therefore have continued to gain weight over the years.  i NEED to lose weight, need to MOVE more, but i feel i'm in a hopeless downward spiral of less-movement & increased-weight cycles.  help?
