I'm not very good at this..

I am on a college ballroom dance team.  I love dancing, but it's hard being on a team full of tiny, physically fit dancers.  Though I'm not obeise by any stretch of the imagination, I feel like a whale around them.  I'd really like to become more physically fit.  I know that I have a different body type, and I'm ok with that.  But I know that I could stand to look healthier.  I want to get rid of love handles and slim my thunder thighs; things like that.  My problem is that I hear so much conflicting advice that I'm not sure what to do.  I had a personal trainer tell me once that I shouldn't do cardio for more than 10 minutes before using machines, but I've also heard that cardio is the most important part of exercise.  I just want a basic regimen to help my become the healthiest version of me possible.  I have a gym pass, but I'm definitely open to other forms of exercise like yoga and pilates.  I'd appreciate any help. Thanks!
