How can I keep fit during winter?

During the cold winter months, it can be tempting to hibernate indoors.

This winter, try to resist the pull of your cosy sofa, dust off your tracksuit and trainers and get active. As the seasons change, so will your activities. Long, leisurely walks are likely to become a thing of the past, as daylight hours get shorter. Instead, try getting back in the saddle by hopping on your bike. A good bike ride does wonders for toning up your legs and back muscles.

Get on your bike

A 15-minute bike ride, five times a week, can burn loads of calories, so imagine how much fitter you would be after a couple of months of good cycling. Ideally, you should do some mild to moderate physical activity for around 30 minutes five times a week, but you must build up to it gradually. The benefits of moderate exercise are huge - it has been found to help reduce your levels of stress, lower your risk of heart disease, and warn off obesity.

Before you start pedalling yourself fit, you must make sure your bike is in good working order. If you don't already have a cycle helmet, pop down to your nearest bike shop and buy one because it could save your life if you fall off your bike. You should also wear reflective clothing when you cycle, so that other vehicles can see you and are aware that you are there.

Don't rush in

Staying active this autumn doesn't have to be an effort. In fact, it should be something you can incorporate into your daily routine for every season. If you fancy starting a new exercise routine, or just getting fitter, check with your doctor first so you don't do anything that is unsafe, or bad, for your health.

You should take on exercise gradually because you are more likely to achieve the goals you have set and stick to your exercise plan. Start your exercise plan slowly, gradually building up when you get fitter. Your body will adjust better if you start slowly, and you'll get stronger without injuring yourself. Make sure you listen to your body and take things at your own pace.

Take it indoors

It's important to maintain a regular exercise routine all year round. This may seem easier during the summer months as you can tend to your garden, or wash your car, to keep fit. During the winter months, why not take your activities indoors. These can include climbing the stairs, sorting the garage, or dancing in the living room.

However, doing exercise indoors doesn't always have to be about taking up activities. Why not make it more productive by doing the housework, such as dusting and vacuuming. As long as you increase your heart rate and build up a sweat, you can be safe in the knowledge that cleaning the house is keeping you fit!
